What that injury did do, regardless of whether he played that game, was meant he had a broken pre-season.”It’s a slight domino effect. The main injury is now feeling good, but he’s probably got a couple of niggles since that, and a tackle at Manchester United in the first game that affected him on the ankle.”There’s a bit of bad luck in there as well. Report: Syria 0 Palestine 0

first_imgPalestine celebrated their first point in Asian Cup history after holding Syria to a 0-0 draw in Sharjah on Sunday despite playing the final 22 minutes with 10 men.Beaten in each of their three matches on debut in 2015, unheralded Palestine were more competitive on this occasion as they succeeded in frustrating stronger opposition despite Mohammed Saleh’s harsh dismissal. The defender received a second yellow card in the 68th minute following a clash of heads with Omar Khrbin but Syria, who have designs on a place in the knockout rounds after impressing in World Cup qualifying, were unable to make their numerical advantage count. An inability to capitalise on a pair of first-half chances allowed Palestine to grow into the contest and Noureddine Ould Ali’s men capably navigated the closing stages in a positive start to their Group B campaign.Syria, though absent from the Asian Cup in 2015, were expected to prove too strong and twice went close in the opening 30 minutes. If you’re enjoying #AsianCup2019 raise your phone. pic.twitter.com/02mTPwJC1b— #AsianCup2019 (@afcasiancup) January 6, 2019The lively Khrbin was at the centre of both opportunities, first seeing Abdallah Jaber make a miraculous goal-line block early in proceedings, before Rami Hamada – whose handling error initiated the first chance – palmed clear a threatening header.Bernd Stange’s side were well on top when Osama Omari went down clutching his knee before half-time and had to be taken off on a stretcher.Their hopes of extracting three points were given a boost with just over 20 minutes remaining as referee Ravshan Irmatov deemed Saleh’s routine aerial challenge with Khrbin worthy of a second booking.Palestine, though, remained as obdurate as they had been until that point and deservedly secured a draw that sets them up nicely for Friday’s date with Australia, who earlier lost to Syria’s next opponents Jordan.last_img read more

Why Bayern Munich can’t afford to lose James Rodriguez

first_img“I expect top performances from him.” When James Rodriguez steps onto the football field, it is expected that he will be a gamechanger. Not just by fans, but by coaches and managers as well. Niko Kovac confirmed last week that the Colombia international was fit to return for Bayern Munich after missing eight games with a knee problem, but included the disclaimer that he wanted Rodriguez to show no signs of rustiness.”I know he’s a top player, I know what he can do,” Kovac told reporters. “He’s shown that not just here but at other big clubs. I expect top performances from him, just like I do any other player. We finished the first half of the season strongly, and competition for places is fierce, as is always the case. Now it’s down to him to show he deserves a place in the team again.” Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? Rodriguez has found game time harder to come by under new Bayern boss Kovac, having been a huge success under Jupp Heynckes in his first season in Munich. Last season, he finished with eight goals and 14 assists in 39 games in all competitions, but has found himself being left out of the starting XI more often in 2018-19.As a result, the 27 year old has been the focus of many transfer rumours throughout the season, with talk of a January loan to Arsenal even cropping up in recent weeks. Reports in Spain have long insisted that Rodriguez is unhappy with his role in Munich, while he is said to have told Kovac “We are not in Frankfurt” following a disappointing draw against Ajax. However, everything Rodriguez has said in public has indicated that he has no problems with either Munich or the coach. He admitted that the only thing on his mind was returning to full fitness and getting back on the pitch.”There are no issues with the coach or any staff,” James told reporters in December. “At the moment I am with Bayern and I have a contract with the club until June and I am happy here, I am calm and in the future we will see what happens. I am only thinking about Bayern, I am recovering well from my injury and I have lots of motivation to return better than ever.”GFX James RodriguezHis return to action on Friday was a 12-minute cameo against Hoffenheim, where he had little time on the pitch but still put in a display worthy of being called a “top performance”. With Hoffenheim pushing for a late equaliser, Bayern secured a 3-1 win as Rodriguez played a perfect pass to Thomas Muller, who had all the time to cross for Robert Lewandowski to score from close range. While it did not count as an assist for the Colombian, who has provided the final ball for just two goals in 12 games in 2018-19, the goal was purely Rodriguez’s creation. His vision picked out Muller, who was able to break through the defence and find Lewandowski. It also showed that Rodriguez should not simply be seen as a backup option for Muller, but can also play alongside the World Cup winner in a dynamic attack. Until now, Muller or Rodriguez was an either/or option for Kovac, but the brief cameo last weekend proves that the duo can work together in support of Lewandowski, and combine to great effect.Muller is suspended for both of Bayern’s games against Liverpool in the Champions League, with the first leg taking place on February 19, almost three weeks after the end of the transfer window. They will need Rodriguez for these matches if they are to stand any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals of the tournament, while it has now become an annual tradition for Bayern to have an injury crisis in the latter stage of the season. Usually, this is not a huge problem domestically, but 2018-19 has not been as easy as usual for the Bavarians on home soil and they find themselves chasing Borussia Dortmund after half the season.Success is expected in Munich, with the Bundesliga title almost an afterthought in recent years as they chase the Champions League. Kovac’s best chance of being successful this season – and keeping his job – is with Rodriguez, who can help create the goals to propel them to the title and onwards in Europe. Letting him leave now would be madness.last_img read more

Wenger: Special Liverpool can always make miracles

first_imgArsene Wenger says Liverpool’s “solidary and fighting strength” was the key to their Champions League success.Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi helped Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday to lift the European Cup/Champions League for the sixth time in the club’s history. The win capped a sensational European run for Liverpool, featuring victories over the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, whom they mounted an incredible comeback against, winning 4-0 at Anfield in last month’s semi-final to overturn a 3-0 first leg deficit . Article continues below Editors’ Picks ‘There is no creativity’ – Can Solskjaer get Man Utd scoring freely again? ‘Everyone legged it on to the pitch!’ – How Foden went from Man City superfan to future superstar Emery out of jail – for now – as brilliant Pepe papers over Arsenal’s cracks What is Manchester United’s ownership situation and how would Kevin Glazer’s sale of shares affect the club? The triumph will help to erase the painful memories of their 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the final in Kiev 12 months ago, and the disappointment of amassing 97 points in the Premier League only  to finish second behind Manchester City , despite losing just one league game all season.Former Arsenal boss Wenger says the source of Liverpool’s success this campaign has been their spirit and togetherness, which is an embodiment of the city itself.“Liverpool is the city of music, of the working class and of football,” the former Arsenal boss told beIN Sports .“As we have seen as an example tonight, it goes all well together.”Anyone who has managed in England knows it is a special place for football. That’s why they can always make miracles.”Wenger also had a warning for Klopp as he looks to build on their Champions League success next season. The Frenchman says the Reds boss must ensure the side do not lose their identify in the quest to improve, though he also concedes that it is a delicate balancing act for a manager to achieve.“They are in a position now where they want to improve the team but without destroying your strong point,” added Wenger.“They need maybe to dominate European football to improve the technical level.“But they might lose what is their strength at the moment, that solidary and fighting strength.“We are always between that in our jobs. We know we need to improve the team. But by improving one aspect you destroy what makes you win.” Subscribe to Goal’s Liverpool Correspondent Neil Jones’ weekly email bringing you the best Liverpool FC writing from around the weblast_img read more

It’s been going on for a little bit now, so to get him is great for everybody.“He’s got everything that a modern-day player wants. He’s got an incredible work-rate about him, he’s got a really good humility about him, and all the attributes a top striker needs.”The 22-year-old is a much-needed reinforcement for a team that has lost several key attacking players from last season. Last year’s top scorer Salomon Rondon returned to West Brom after spending the season on loan with Newcastle, and was promptly sold to Benitez’s new side Dalian Yifang. In addition, Ayoze Perez joined Leicester City and Joselu departed to link up with Alaves in his native Spain. The Magpies will hope Joelinton can help fill the void, with the Brazilian having netted 11 goals in 35 appearances in all competitions for Hoffenheim last season.Prior to last season Joelinton spent two campaigns on loan with Rapid Vienna, where he scored 15 league goals in 60 appearances.last_img read more

How Much Money Kyler Murray Reportedly Wants To Play Baseball

(Photo by Mike Stobe/Getty Images)Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray has until tomorrow to declare for the 2019 NFL Draft, though the Oakland A’s are still trying to get the two-sport star to commit to them for next year and beyond.Oakland took Murray in the top 10 of last April’s MLB Draft and gave him a signing bonus of nearly $5 million. However, after originally saying he would focus on baseball, Murray is reportedly leaning toward the NFL.Earlier today, reports emerged that the A’s were sending a large contingent of team officials, including team president Billy Beane, to meet with Murray.  Their goal was to convince him to choose baseball. Now, the latest report from WFAA’s Mike Leslie indicates Murray might want big money to choose hardball over the gridiron.According to a source close to the situation, Kyler Murray’s number is $15M.He wants big time money to stick with baseball, otherwise he will enter the NFL draft tomorrow. The A’s are doing everything they can, sending their top brass, led by Billy Beane, to meet with him.— Mike Leslie (@MikeLeslieWFAA) January 13, 2019If this report from Leslie is accurate, let’s assess this from both sides. It makes sense for Murray to want to get as much guaranteed money as possible, particularly if he really wants to play football. However, allocating that much to him might not be worth it for Oakland. That is a lot of money for a college outfielder who isn’t a sure bet to make the major leagues.Obviously, the A’s love Murray’s talent, but he’s regarded as a prospect who needs time to develop. We’ll see how this all turns out soon.last_img read more

We’ll see how they line up,” Ponting was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.Finch has registered scores of 27, 0, 28, 11, 50, 25, 8 and 3 for a total of 97 runs in the series so far at an average of just over 16.Khawaja has performed a little better with 167 runs at 27.83 with a highest score of 72.The SCG is traditionally Australia’s most spin-friendly Test venue and Ponting believes Labuschagne could play a role as the second spinner behind Nathan Lyon.advertisement”He looked impressive a couple of times in the UAE in the Tests over there. (He) bowled well, which is something they’re probably thinking about for the SCG Test as well. To be honest I haven’t seen a lot of him I’ll reserve my judgment until I see a little more,” Ponting added.Through a chaotic few months and in the years building up to his maiden Test tour Queenslander Marnus Labuschagne has never stopped believing in the Baggy Green | @AdamBurnett09 https://t.co/l5A76UFlZo pic.twitter.com/6yFUtNbH8tcricket.com.au (@cricketcomau) December 31, 2018The most successful Australian skipper also pointed out that the batsmen are mental mistakes while technical issues have also crept into their game.”There are mental mistakes being made and a lot of technical issues that need to be addressed pretty quickly. But they’re not going to find those (answers) in three days.”So it’s going to come down more to the mental side of things and we’ll see if they’re up for the battle or not in Sydney. There’s a still a series on the line being 2-1 down, they have to win in Sydney so let’s hope they respond really well,” Ponting concluded. With India 2-1 up in the four-match series, the focus now shifts to the fourth Test in Sydney which will offer more spin to the tweakers giving the tourists an added advantage as Ravichandran Ashwin is close to match-fitness and should return to the side for the New Year Test. Also Read | Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara difference between India-Australia: Justin LangerAlso Read | India the real deal now, can combat in Australia, South Africa and New Zealand: Allan BorderAlso Read | This is the best Indian bowling attack to come to Australia: Ricky PontingFor sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
