the students of upper primary classes (Class VI to VIII) fail to read and write simple sentences (Express photo) Related News The Gujarat education department has planned to include private schools in the annual evaluation drive Gunotsav this year The drive which got delayed due to local body elections is scheduled to be held from January 7-9 the department revealed during a presentation to cabinet ministers here on Tuesday The department’s move comes in the wake of declining state board results The Class X results of the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) recorded since 2004 plummeted to the lowest pass percentage of 5442 per cent in the academic session 2014-2015 What’s more even this percentage could be achieved only after giving 25 grace marks Besides Class VI-VIII students will undergo reading and writing test during the evaluation drive this time round Till now such a test was limited to Class V only During the previous Gunotsav it was revealed that the students of upper primary classes (Class VI to VIII) fail to read and write simple sentences The sixth season of the three-day long evaluation drive across the state approved by the cabinet meeting Tuesday will cover over 34000 government and grant-in-aid primary schools It is also expected to add nearly 7000 self-financed schools affiliated to the GSHSEB Sources revealed that the idea to include private schools under the evaluation drive has come up after analysing the poor performance of students in the state board examinations “The department is of the view that though the performance of government schools is tracked there is no such provision for the self-financed schools Further the performance of government school students is not very encouraging This time efforts are also made to include MPs” revealed a senior official of the education department The recent Gunotsav results – covering 34237 primary schools — revealed a total of 1670 schools graded under the lowest D grade while 4776 were graded C The maximum were under B grade (15799 schools) followed by grade A (11134 schools) and the least under A+ grade (858 schools) This covered a total of 4546 lakh students 7929 per cent out of a total of 5736 lakh students Last year the state education department had expanded the evaluation drive to grant-in-aid and self-financed secondary schools as well Besides government primary schools the evaluation of nearly 10 lakh students from government and private secondary schools affiliated to the GSHSEB was conducted across the state The Gunotsav is a combination of both internal and external evaluation It is done by serving and retired IAS IPS and IFS officers class I officers at the secretariat and Head of Departments class I and II staff of the district education office university vice-chancellors and professors retired education officers District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) principals education inspectors and principals of secondary and higher secondary school and colleges This time the choice of schools for the officials is also limited to the ones that were chosen during the enrolment drive Praveshotsav Thus the officials who went to a particular school during the enrolment drive will cover the same for Gunotsav as well The internal evaluation (reading writing and mathematics) is being conducted of all students from Class II till V on an optical mark reader (OMR) sheet which is filled by the external evaluators based on the students’ performance It is a multiple-choice-questions-based examination for students from Class VI till VIII This is followed by the external evaluation where nearly 30 per cent of schools are covered by senior officials who visit different schools to assess and grade
