What are Dual Trauma Couples?

first_imgRachel Dorman, MS & Heidi Radunovich, PhDTraumatic events can have long lasting impacts on an individual, and military members returning from deployment could be coping with exposure to multiple traumatic events. Traumatic events can result in PTSD, anxiety, isolation, and depression. Nelson Goff and colleagues (2014) sought to not only learn more about military members coping with traumas but also what happens when their partners have experienced trauma as well. The researchers specifically sought to learn more about dual trauma couples (DTC) and how having 2 partners coping with trauma impacts the relationship. The study involved 11 married couples, consisting of 11 male soldiers and their female partners (some of whom had a military background). In five of the couples, only the soldier was found to have experienced a high level of traumatic experiences (single trauma couples, or STC); in the other six couples, both members scored as having had a high level of traumatic experience (DTC). Participants had to be 18 years or older, in their relationship for a year or more, and reported no substance abuse or domestic violence during the initial screening. Participants were interviewed separately from their partner, and were also given written measures, which included the Traumatic Events Questionnaire (TEQ), the Purdue Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Scale – Revised, the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40, and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale.[Flickr, 20150718-Z-SW098-196 by Maryland National Guard, CC BY-ND 2.0] Retrieved on September 17, 2015The researchers found communication problems and trauma triggers to be unique themes to DTC as compared to STC. The researchers found that eleven of the twelve participants in this DTC category reported communication problems, such as not being open and sharing information and the avoidance of conversations related to traumatic events. Trauma related triggers, such as being startled by daily events, were identified by the researchers in nine of the twelve participants in the DTC category. Most of the STC participants described positive couple communication (e.g., staying connected while deployed, perspective taking, and being able to discuss issues openly). The researchers recommend for clinicians working with military couples who have experienced trauma to evaluate for communication problems, trauma triggers, and issues with relationship roles and intimacy.  The researchers also highlight the importance of practitioners being more aware of DTC, and the fact that when both members of a couple are coping with trauma, this can add additional stress to a couple’s relationship. Icebergs off Miami?

first_imgIf the cruise industry had existed between 10,000 and 20,000 years ago, ships headed in and out of Miami would have had to dodge icebergs. As the last ice age waned and climate warmed, immense lakes of glacial meltwater that accumulated behind natural ice dams occasionally burst forth from the mouth of Canada’s Hudson Bay and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. When those iceberg-laden outburst floods—some of them carrying more than 1 million cubic meters of water per second and lasting several months—reached the open sea, they took a right turn and flowed south along the coast as far as the Florida Keys, a new study suggests. The torrent-driven icebergs, some of them hundreds of meters thick, plowed troughs in the sea floor all along the continental shelf (like those found in 170- to 380-meter-deep waters off the coast of South Carolina; one such berm-edged trough extends from lower left to top center of the image). Sea levels have risen more than 100 meters since most of these troughs were formed, which has helped preserve them from surface waves that could roil and smooth seafloor sediments. Whereas the troughs off South Carolina measure up to 100 meters across and 20 meters deep, those off the central Florida Keys (now found in waters between 215 and 280 meters deep) typically are no more than 50 meters wide and 5 meters deep—as expected, because the bergs would have melted to smaller size as they drifted south, the researchers report online today in Nature Geoscience. Some of the iceberg scours off Miami Beach, probably created by icebergs the size of those setting sail from Greenland today, lie less than 12 kilometers offshore.last_img read more

Virat Kohli reacts to Anil Kumble resignation: Respect his decision to step down

first_imgVirat Kohli said he respected Anil Kumble’s decision to step down as coach of the Indian team after a successful one-year term.Kohli is currenly in the West Indies where India will play a five-match ODI series starting Friday and sign off with a T20 International on July 9.WATCH FULL VIDEOKumble resigned as coach after a successful one-year term following a rift with Kohli. “I was informed for the first time yesterday by the BCCI that the Captain had reservations with my ‘style’ and about my continuing as the Head Coach. I was surprised since I had always respected the role boundaries between Captain and Coach. Though the BCCI attempted to resolve the misunderstandings between the Captain and me, it was apparent that the partnership was untenable, and I therefore believe it is best for me to move on,” Kumble wrote on Tuesday in a statement.Reports of the rift had first emerged days before India’s Champions Trophy campaign began in England earlier this month. However, Kohli denied the reports and dismissed them as mere speculation. However, Kumble’s statement left little to the imagination. On Thursday, Kohli deleted a tweet he had put out welcoming Kumble as India coach in 2016. But hours later, in a pre-match press conference (India play their first ODI vs West Indies at Port of Spain on Friday), Kohli said: “Anil bhai has expressed his views and has taken a decision to step out. We all respect that decision. It is something that happened right after the tournament. “advertisement”It is his opinion for which I have respect…I will always have respect for him as a cricketer and whatever he has achieved,” he added. The captain, though, took a dig at Kumble and said maintaining dressing room sanctity was important.(COA chief Vinod Rai needs to play an active role, CAC member Sourav Ganguly tells India Today)”I have been part of 11 press conferences that happened during the Champions Trophy. We have created a culture in the last three four years that whatever has happened in the dressing room remains inside, we have tried to maintain that sanctity throughout. For us, that is paramount and very sacred. It is something which I will not explain in detail in public scenario,” said the 28-year-old.Kumble, meanwhile, refused to comment on Kohli’s comments and said he had said whatever he had to say.”I am too seasoned, you won’t get anything out of me. I have said what I had to say. No (more) comments,” was all Kumble had to say on Kohli’s reaction.Kumble’s original contract expired with the team’s Champions Trophy campaign, but the former captain was tipped to get an extension after enjoying a successful run during his year in charge.”While the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) had endorsed an extension to his tenure as head coach, Anil Kumble has decided not to continue as the coach,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) said in a statement.Last year the BCCI formed the CAC, comprising former players Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, who chose Kumble for the job.(With inputs from Reuters)last_img read more

Wenger: Special Liverpool can always make miracles

first_imgArsene Wenger says Liverpool’s “solidary and fighting strength” was the key to their Champions League success.Goals from Mohamed Salah and Divock Origi helped Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Tottenham 2-0 in Madrid on Saturday to lift the European Cup/Champions League for the sixth time in the club’s history. The win capped a sensational European run for Liverpool, featuring victories over the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Barcelona, whom they mounted an incredible comeback against, winning 4-0 at Anfield in last month’s semi-final to overturn a 3-0 first leg deficit . The triumph will help to erase the painful memories of their 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the final in Kiev 12 months ago, and the disappointment of amassing 97 points in the Premier League only  to finish second behind Manchester City , despite losing just one league game all season.Former Arsenal boss Wenger says the source of Liverpool’s success this campaign has been their spirit and togetherness, which is an embodiment of the city itself.“Liverpool is the city of music, of the working class and of football,” the former Arsenal boss told beIN Sports .“As we have seen as an example tonight, it goes all well together.”Anyone who has managed in England knows it is a special place for football. That’s why they can always make miracles.”Wenger also had a warning for Klopp as he looks to build on their Champions League success next season. The Frenchman says the Reds boss must ensure the side do not lose their identify in the quest to improve, though he also concedes that it is a delicate balancing act for a manager to achieve.“They are in a position now where they want to improve the team but without destroying your strong point,” added Wenger.“They need maybe to dominate European football to improve the technical level.“But they might lose what is their strength at the moment, that solidary and fighting strength.“We are always between that in our jobs. We know we need to improve the team. But by improving one aspect you destroy what makes you win.” Subscribe to Goal’s Liverpool Correspondent Neil Jones’ weekly email bringing you the best Liverpool FC writing from around the weblast_img read more

UN report highlights disadvantages faced by women in agricultural employment

Women continue to reap less benefits from employment in agriculture than men in rural areas, and the recent global financial and food crises have slowed down progress towards gender equality in farming-related labour, three United Nations agencies said in a joint report unveiled today.According to the report, compiled by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), women face discrimination that limits both their economic productivity and their personal development. The report – entitled “Gender dimensions of agricultural and rural employment: Differentiated pathways out of poverty” – notes that women need access to education, training, credit, markets, technical assistance and labour protection. They also need equal, secure access to land and other assets and “social capital,” including the ability to participate equally in farmers’ organizations. It says that with access to the advantages that are available to men, women can increase their contribution to national development and poverty reduction.Given that 70 per cent of the developing world’s 1.4 billion extremely poor people live in rural areas, raising rural women’s economic participation is crucial for achievement of the global poverty reduction and social development targets known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), the report adds.“It is interesting to observe that 90 per cent of the wage gap between men and women in developed or developing counties is unexplained; in other words, it is attributed to gender discrimination,” the report says.“With job losses and cuts in spending on social services and infrastructure, women’s care burdens and unpaid work have intensified, and their financial contribution to household food security is likely to decrease,” the report says. ‘This is particularly dramatic for female-headed households.”According to the report, the enormous economic contribution of women’s unpaid work must be recognized and measures implemented to reduce and redistribute the burden of housework in order to reap better rewards for women.Public works programmes can support gender equality in rural employment, especially if beneficiaries are genuinely involved in designing them, the report notes, adding that promoting quality female education in rural areas and reducing gender gaps in primary and secondary schooling could improve women’s access to decent employment. The report recommends policy measures to address the many gender differences in rural employment. The measures should include legal reforms that promote gender equality; social safety nets; assistance to organizations supporting farmers, women and youth; child care programmes; education; and better access to information and labour markets. 21 January 2011Women continue to reap less benefits from employment in agriculture than men in rural areas, and the recent global financial and food crises have slowed down progress towards gender equality in farming-related labour, three United Nations agencies said in a joint report unveiled today. read more

Possible Second expansion for Middle Islands Sandstone gold project in WA

first_imgAspiring gold developer, Middle Island Resources’ 100% subsidiary, Sandstone Operations Pty Ltd (SOPL), has executed a deed, whereby SOPL has the option to acquire a 100% interest in the Dandaraga gold project, comprising granted Exploration Licence E57/1028, from SLS Exploration. The Dandaraga gold project covers an area of 605 ha and lies 16 km southeast of the company’s existing Sandstone gold project. Importantly, the Dandaraga project lies only 4 km south of the historic (but well-preserved) haul road linking the Lord Henry and Lord Nelson deposits with Middle Island’s 600,000 t/y Sandstone gold processing plant. The Dandaraga geology comprises a succession of banded iron formations (BIFs), ultramafics, gabbros and, importantly, doleritesThe project incorporates a series of historic gold workings that remain untested or poorly tested by modern gold explorationThe more significant Agnes workings are developed on a zone of stockwork quartz veining within a dolerite unit, adjacent to which free gold has been identified in a highly brecciated, gossanous and quartz-veined BIFThe Dandaraga project is largely well-exposed, facilitating rapid, conventional and cost-effective exploration for additional targetsThe Dandaraga acquisition presents both an immediate and attractive open pit exploration target at the Agnes gold prospect, and consolidates considerable exploration acreage into Middle Island’s well-endowed Sandstone gold tenureThe transaction is entirely consistent with Middle Island’s strategy to extend and enhance the proposed production schedule for its 100%-owned Sandstone gold processing plantIt will be the second such expansion, following the company’s June signing of an option to acquire the Wirraminna gold project, situated immediately adjacent to the Sandstone project and within 1 km of the processing plant.last_img read more
