United win battle of Manchester to leave City 14 points off top

first_imgManchester, United Kingdom | AFP | Manchester United landed another body blow to Manchester City’s hopes of retaining the Premier League title with a 2-1 derby win at the Etihad that leaves the champions 14 points adrift of runaway leaders Liverpool.Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial scored the goals for the visitors, who should have made the margin of victory even greater with a host of first half chances.Nicolas Otamendi pulled a goal back to give City hope five minutes from time, but that was too little, too late for Pep Guardiola’s men, who suffered a fourth league defeat in 16 games.United remain eight points adrift of their neighbours, but move up to fifth and within five points of fourth-placed Chelsea to haul themselves back into contention for a return to the Champions League next season.City’s priority may also now be limited to securing a top-four finish with the gap to Liverpool growing by the week and a makeshift defence that has now failed to keep a clean sheet in nine games. In the midst of another testing season for United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men have often saved their best for the toughest opposition having beaten Tottenham, Leicester and Chelsea and been the only side yet to take Premier League points off Liverpool.City were powerless to stop the visitors pace on the break in the opening quarter in which United should have scored more than twice.Ederson made a hat-trick of big saves to deny Daniel James, Jesse Lingard and Martial before United were awarded a penalty when Rashford was chopped down by Bernardo Silva inside the area.Referee Anthony Taylor amazingly did not point to the spot in the first instance, but was quickly corrected by a VAR review.Rashford stepped up to continue his fine form with a 13th goal in 14 games for club and country. The 22-year-old’s 13 for United this season also matches his career-high for a single campaign and he should have had a couple more in the minutes after opening the scoring. Firstly, Rashford curled an effort wide with just Ederson to beat form a fine pass by Martial before he fired another effort off the bar.A United second was a matter of time as they continued to cut City open at will on the counter-attack and it duly arrived as James and Martial skipped around a host of half-hearted challenges before the Frenchman caught Ederson out at his near post.City restored some semblance of order in the closing stages of the first half and should have been given a route back into the game by Gabriel Jesus when he headed Kevin de Bruyne’s inch-perfect cross wide. The home side were also furious when Fred was not penalised for handball  as he blocked Kyle Walker’s cross inside his own area with VAR this time backing Taylor’s decision not to give a spot-kick.City applied the pressure after half-time but seemed devoid of ideas bar De Bruyne. The Belgian’s driven effort was deflected over by a brilliant last-ditch challenge from Victor Lindelof before Rodrigo’s effort from De Bruyne’s layoff was tipped over by David de Gea.Otamendi gave City life five minutes from time when he rose highest to meet Riyad Mahrez’s corner.United were suddenly rocking and De Gea had to make a brilliant save moments later to deny Mahrez an equaliser. But they held out to round off a huge week for Solskjaer. The Norwegian was facing questions over his future just six days ago after a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa left United with just four wins from their opening 14 league games. However, victories over Jose Mourinho on his return to Old Trafford with Tottenham on Wednesday and now the side who have left United second best in their own city in recent times, massively relieves the pressure on Solskjaer.Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more

They have lost only two games this season, equal lowest in the Barclays Premier League with Leicester. They have also conceded only 15 goals, the fewest in the division.Everton, meanwhile, have dropped to 11th following two defeats in their last three games, including Monday’s dramatic 4-3 reverse against Stoke City. At Goodison Park, Everton have won just three, yet they have also scored 22 home goals, the most in the division.Spurs will hope that Erik Lamela maintains his good record; the Argentine has scored four goals in his past five games in all competitions for Tottenham. And team-mate Harry Kane scored 29 goals in 2015.Everton’s Romelu Lukaku is enjoying an equally rich vein of form; he has 18 goals in all competitions so far and has 11 in his last 10 games, scoring in nine. And while there are proven goalscorers involved, a draw is the favoured result given the history of this fixture. In 23 previous Goodison Park clashes, no fewer than 10 have been drawn (including five at 0-0).Tottenham have won on eight occasions including last season – when Kane got the winner. But when they met at White Hart Lane in August it finished 0-0, with Spurs extended their unbeaten run against Everton home and away to six games.Everton give tests to Tom Cleverley, James McCarthy and Phil Jagielka while Tottenham have a doubt over Moussa Dembele.last_img read more

Freshwater fishing

first_img Kern River The Lower Kern through Kern River Canyon is a little muddy and high but still is fishing fairly well. Most anglers are scoring with Pautzke Orange Label or Green Label Balls ‘O Fire eggs, worms and crickets. The Upper Kern is fair, and when the wind isn’t blowing, anglers are catching pan-size trout near the launch ramp at Lake Isabella. Power Bait has been the best bet for anglers fishing Buena Vista Lakes. For more info: Bob’s Bait Bucket (661) 833-8657. Orange County Irvine Lake Trout fishing was fair the past week. Bait fishing has been generally more productive than trolling, with night crawlers and chartreuse or rainbow Power Bait on short 6- to 10-inch leaders best near Trout Island, the docks, Woody’s Cove and Santiago Flats. Trout range from 1-0 to 4-0. Some incidental bluegill and small bass have hit on night crawlers intended for trout. Crappie fishing is really taking off, with many limits of hand-size crappie and a few larger slabs being seen. Best bet is white/yellow mini jigs fished near the fence line on Trout Island. For more info: Irvine Lake Pro Shop (714) 649-9111. Santa Barbara County Lake Cachuma Anglers are reporting a good smallmouth bass bite on deep diving crankbaits and slow retrieved spinnerbaits in Santa Cruz Bay on Jackrabbit Flat in 15-25 feet of water. The trout bite has slowed a little, but trollers fishing from Santa Cruz Bay to The Narrows are doing well on fish that are running a half-pound to a pound. The shore action is pretty slow still. For more info: Lake Cachuma Marina (805) 688-4040. Riverside County Diamond Valley Reservoir The typical winter bite is on here. Anglers are taking some swimbait fish off points and in coves, but most folks are chasing trout in the marina area. Trout are being caught on jigs, worms and by casting spinners and spoons. For more info: Diamond Valley Marina (951) 926-7201. San Diego County Lake Cuyamaca Snow fell here Saturday, but that didn’t hurt the fishing. The bite has turned to a shoreline bait gig. Anglers floating Pautzke Balls ‘O Fire salmon eggs off the bottom are scoring easy limits, and another trout plant of 1,000 fish this week should keep the bite steady. Others are doing well with night crawlers fished on a 24- to 36-inch leader. For best results, inject Liquid Krill into the night crawlers. Other species slow. For more info: Lake Cuyamaca (877) 581-9904. Lake Jennings The trout bite finally is improving. Anglers fishing in Hermit Cove with worms are doing OK, but it’s those with rental or private boats that are doing best. Trout are still in deep water. Another 1,200 pounds of trout are going to be planted Friday. The channel catfish bite is fair for anglers working mackerel soaked in red Nectar along the buoy line. Bass anglers are scoring with ice jigs and swimbaits. The biggest bass this week went 8-0. Bass to nearly 13 pounds were taken on various swimbaits. Although a 17-pound catfish was caught on mackerel dipped in Catmando sauce, the catfish bite has slowed. A trout plant took place last Wednesday, but trout fishing was good only the day the fish were stocked. Trout action is poor now. For more info: Lake Casitas Boat Rentals (805) 649-2043. Lake Piru The trout bite is good following a plant of 3,600 fish last Wednesday. Trout are being caught by trollers near the dam, 35-40 feet deep, with Needlefish, Kastmasters, Roostertails or just about anything you want to troll. On shore, trout are being caught near the marina on salmon eggs, night crawlers and Power Bait. Bluegill are still available in 20 feet of water near the dam. Fishing pressure is way down. For more info: Lake Piru Marina (805) 521-1231. Kern County The bite is fair for largemouth and stripers. Anglers able to net live shad are doing best, but they aren’t always available, with only some pods of shad moving into shallow water areas. If you can’t get shad, jigs, spoons, spinnerbaits, swimbaits and reaction baits are your best bet. A trout plant of 1,500 pounds went in Jan. 9 at the West Ramp – not the main ramp this time. The purpose was to plant the trout in an area that anglers would have more access to fish for trout, but the trout bite is slow. For more info: Castaic Landing (661) 775-6232. What does 49ers deadline deal with Nick Bosa mean?

first_imgSANTA CLARA — Signing NFL draft picks to contracts is mostly a formality thanks to the 2011 installation of a pay scale, and, as a result, the 49ers have not had a top draft pick hold out even a full day before signing.Nick Bosa, this year’s No. 2 overall draft pick, will not buck that trend.A day before the 49ers start training camp, Bosa signed a four-year deal Thursday, as did wide receiver Deebo Samuel, a wide receiver.Bosa missed almost all of the organized team activities after …last_img read more

Monarch Deposed by Painted Lady

first_img(Visited 35 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0 Painted lady butterflies make an even more spectacular migration than the famous Monarchs, observers just found. The Monarch butterfly travels about 6,000 miles round trip in its migration from Canada to Mexico.  That record has been bested by painted ladies, which fly 9,000 miles, it has just been discovered.  This amazing feat was just reported today on the BBC News and Science Now.  Richard Fox, the survey manager of Butterfly Conservation said,“This tiny creature weighing less than a gram, with a brain the size of a pin head, and no opportunity to learn from older, experienced individuals, undertake [sic] an epic intercontinental migration.”Why wasn’t this discovered before now?  Brits thought the colorful insects just died off at the end of summer.  It turns out, rather, that they land in the British Isles as a feeding stop on their intercontinental migration from tropical Africa to the edge of the Arctic Circle and back.  While in the UK, they increase their numbers till they leave in two waves, one in August and one in October.  They were not seen migrating because they fly super-high: average 500 meters, but as high as 1,000 meters.  It took radar to spot them.Thousands of participants took part in solving the mystery of where they went.  As with Monarchs, it takes up to six generations of butterflies to complete the annual trip.   With favorable winds they can fly 30 miles per hour.Painted ladies with their bright orange-dappled wings have been appreciated casually for millennia, but only now have their epic migrations been recognized.  One of the authors of the paper said, “So we’ve kind of got this amazing creature right under our noses without really realising.”This discovery suggests that more incredible stories are still out there.  Here it is, 2012, and we are just finding out this amazing migration story.  Congratulations to all those who took part; everyone who loves natural wonders should be very pleased.  Will more epic migrations be found in Russia, China, or other parts of the world?  It would be surprising if Monarchs and Painted Ladies are the only species that travel this far.A new 3-D IMAX film about Monarchs is out this month, Flight of the Butterflies.  Interesting observation: There’s a quote on the home page, “Evolution is written on the wings of butterflies.”  A couple of weeks ago, Charles Darwin was listed as the source.  Today, his name has been scrubbed, but the quote is still there.  Wonder what happened; was there a complaint? Is Darwin’s name too controversial? If you want a documentary that takes on the assumption of evolution, be sure to watch Metamorphosis: The Beauty and Design of Butterflies from Illustra Media (available in DVD and Blu-Ray with surround sound).  The film masterfully shows many species of butterflies in all their glory, with a focus on their amazing life-cycles that defy evolution, and then reveals the Monarch migration in a heart-lifting true-life adventure story.  This is a wonderful tool to share the positive case for intelligent design.  Now it looks like a sequel featuring painted ladies would be in order.last_img read more

PostRank Live with Google Buzz Firehose

first_imgBefore now, PostRank, the popular social media analytics service, had to manually crawl all Google Buzz accounts and subscribe to the public feeds it found separately prior to meshing that information with the rest of its data.
